Ori |

In Yoruba, ori directly translates to “head,” but more deeply refers to one’s inner consciousness and destiny. This piece explores the disconnect between that spiritual essence and the lived reality of being Black in America, where identity is often judged solely by physical appearance. The durag and African-patterned clothing reference the external self, markers of culture that carry heavy bias and stereotype. In contrast, the exposed inner figure reveals the unseen ori: the mind, spirit, and heart. Though visually opposed, both figures are the same being, asking why society struggles to see beyond the Black body to the humanity within.
